Safe use of machinery and equipment – a simple checklist

GTM Kompetanse|

Working with machinery and technical equipment is part of everyday life in many businesses. At the same time, this is where many serious work accidents occur every year.
With proper training, routines and follow-up, most accidents can be avoided.

Here you will find a simple checklist that helps you ensure the safe and proper use of machinery and work equipment - regardless of industry.

1. Training and competence

  • Ensure that everyone who uses machines has received the necessary training.
  • Review user and safety instructions before starting.
  • Provide additional training when there are changes in machinery or work methods.
  • Document that the training has been provided – this is a legal requirement.

Tip: Combine practical training with short refresher sessions regularly. This strengthens the safety culture and reduces the risk of negligence.

The machine must be safe

  • Machines must be CE marked and approved for use in Norway.
  • All safety functions (such as emergency stops, guards and locking mechanisms) must function properly.
  • Carry out regular maintenance and checks according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Report errors and defects immediately – never use the machine until it has been repaired.

Remember: Many accidents happen when you try to “just finish” a job with defective equipment.

Proper protective equipment

  • Use approved protective equipment adapted to the work – for example, safety shoes, gloves, helmet, safety glasses or hearing protection.
  • Replace damaged or worn equipment immediately.
  • Ensure that protective equipment is used consistently and correctly, not just “when needed”.

A common problem: Incorrect use of gloves around rotating machinery can increase the risk of pinch injuries – adapt the protective equipment to the task.

Safe workplace

  • Ensure order and cleanliness around the machines.
  • Mark dangerous zones and use barriers where necessary.
  • Ensure good lighting and correct working posture to avoid mistakes.
  • Have emergency equipment readily available – first aid kit, fire extinguisher and emergency number.

A tidy work area saves lives. Many accidents happen when floors are slippery, tools are scattered or access is blocked.

Maintenance and cleaning

  • Only carry out maintenance when the machine is switched off and secured against starting.
  • Always use the right tools and methods – never improvise.
  • Set up regular routines for cleaning, inspection and service.
  • Document all maintenance so that you can refer to follow-up during inspections.

Extra important: Maintenance work is among the work operations where the most serious accidents occur.

Reporting and learning

  • Report near misses and dangerous situations – they provide valuable learning.
  • Make it safe for employees to speak up without fear of consequences.
  • Share experiences within the team – small adjustments can prevent major accidents.

Good HSE is not just about rules, but about culture.

Take safety seriously – every day

Safe use of machinery and equipment is about routines, responsibility and attitudes.
When everyone knows the dangers, follows procedures and reports any deviations, the risk is significantly reduced.
A safe working environment is created through competence, collaboration and continuous improvement – not coincidence.
