Is there a requirement for a lift course?

GTM Kompetanse|

Using a lift – or personnel lift – involves working at height, and requires both knowledge and responsibility. That is why the authorities have set clear requirements for training. In this article, we will give you an overview of the requirements for a lift course, what the training entails, and how you can ensure that you or your employees use a lift in a safe and compliant manner.

Why is lift training important?

Handling a personal lift is not just a matter of pressing a few buttons. It is about knowing how to use it safely, daily checks and maintenance – and not least being able to assess risk. The aim of the course is to reduce the risk of accidents and incidents, and ensure that work at height is carried out safely. It is a requirement according to the regulations on the performance of work (§ 10-1 and § 10-3) that the training must be documented.

How long does a lift pass last?

Course certificate – has no expiration date. However, it is recommended to take a refresher course if it has been a long time since you last used a lift, or if there have been any unwanted incidents related to the work.

What does documented training mean?

“Documented training” means that the employer is responsible for ensuring – and being able to demonstrate – that employees have undergone the necessary training for the work equipment they use. It is not enough to have “learned it from a colleague” – the training must be systematic and documentable.

Is fall protection required when using a lift?

The use of personal fall protection equipment is recommended, but is not always an absolute requirement. The employer and operator must jointly carry out a risk assessment to assess the need. When working near water, it should be considered whether it is more appropriate to use a life jacket rather than fall protection equipment.

Do you need practical training?

Yes – the regulations require that employees who use lifts must have both theoretical and practical training. This means that they must have received training in the relevant lift class they will be using, in line with the manufacturer's instructions and regulatory requirements. The training must also be updated regularly.

Is there an age limit for using the lift?

Yes, you must be at least 18 years old to use the lift. Exceptions can be made for schoolchildren and apprentices, but then additional measures are required such as risk assessment, a sponsor scheme and informed consent from guardians.

Are lift courses required by law?

Yes. According to §10 of the Regulations on the Performance of Work, everyone who will use a lift must have completed documented training – both practical and theoretical. This applies regardless of whether it is a question of regular use or just occasional assignments.

What classes are there for lifting?

Lifters are divided into three main categories:

  • Class A: Trailer-mounted personnel lifts
  • Class B: Self-propelled personnel lifts
  • Class C: Vehicle-mounted personal lifts

You must have training in the class that corresponds to the type of lift you will be using.

Do passengers also have to be trained?

If a person is only going to be a passenger in a lift, the employer must assess the risk. If the risk warrants it, the passenger must also have documented safety training.

Who can provide practical training?

Practical training must be provided by a competent person with the necessary experience and documented training in the corresponding lift class. The person must sign documentation of the completed practice.

How much wind can a lift withstand?

In general, personnel lifts should not be used in wind speeds above 12.5 m/s. Please note that some machines have lower tolerances, and that gusting winds and local conditions may increase the risk. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Where can I take a lift course?

Lift courses can be taken both as a classroom course and as an online course. The online course is a flexible option that allows you to complete the course at your convenience – no matter where you are.
