Can apprentices and students take lift courses? Clear rules and requirements explained

GTM Kompetanse|

When it comes to working at height, proper training is crucial for safety – including for apprentices and students. Many people ask questions about who can take a lift course and what rules apply. In this post, you will get a clear overview of what applies to lift courses and fall protection.

What is a lift course?

Lift courses provide training in the safe use of personal lifts (lifts), which are common aids when working at height. The course covers, among other things:

  • Laws and regulations related to the use of lifts
  • Safety procedures before, during and after use
  • Practical training in operating personnel lifts
  • Risk assessments and accident prevention

We offer professional lifting courses (personnel lifts) that ensure that participants receive a valid certificate of competence.

Can apprentices and students participate in lift courses?

The answer is yes – as long as they meet certain requirements:

  • Age: You must be at least 18 years old to obtain the course certificate required to operate a lift on your own. However, training opportunities are available for younger participants as part of their schooling or apprenticeship, under supervision.

  • Supervision: Apprentices and students can participate in lift courses as part of their training, but they must have sufficient guidance and training from qualified personnel.

  • Safety first: It is important that apprentices do not operate lifts without having received approved training and having the necessary skills.

Why is fall protection training important for apprentices?

In many cases, working at height also requires expertise in fall protection. This is especially true when working in areas with a risk of falling. Our fall protection course provides the necessary knowledge about equipment, methods and prevention, and should be combined with a lift course for the best possible safety.

Rules and requirements

  • The Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority requires that everyone who will use personal lifts must have documented training.
  • Apprentices shall have training adapted to their age and experience.
  • All employers are responsible for ensuring that employees – including apprentices and students – receive the necessary training before using lifts or other height-related equipment.

Summary

Apprentices and students can certainly take a lift course , but it must be done under the right conditions with good training and guidance. Combining a lift course with a fall protection course provides a safe and sound competence that is absolutely necessary for working at height.
