Scaffolding training is an important part of safety on a construction site. Knowing which course you need, and when more advanced training is required, can be crucial for both your own safety and the safety of others. In this post, we explain the difference between user training and more comprehensive scaffolding training – and give you clear guidelines on what is required.
What is user course scaffolding?
The scaffolding user course provides basic training in the safe use of scaffolding. The course is suitable for those who will be working on a pre-assembled scaffold without performing any assembly or modifications. Here you will learn, among other things, how to travel safely on the scaffolding, use proper fall protection, and know the most important safety rules.

When is a user course enough?
The user course is sufficient if you:
- Will be performing work on scaffolding that has already been erected by qualified personnel
- Not to participate in the assembly, modification or dismantling of the scaffolding
- Requires basic knowledge of safe scaffolding and fall protection
For example, painters, electricians or other tradespeople who only use the scaffold as a work platform will often do well with user training.
When do you need a more advanced scaffolding course?
However, if you are going to assemble, adapt or dismantle scaffolding, a more comprehensive course is required. At GTM Kompetanse we offer several options:
- Scaffolding course 2–5 meters with fall protection : For work on scaffolding up to 5 meters high.
- Scaffolding course 2–9 meters with fall protection : For work on scaffolding up to 9 meters high.
These courses include training in the assembly, safety, inspection and use of fall protection equipment.

What do the regulations say?
The regulations require that those who erect and inspect scaffolding have relevant training and expertise. It is therefore important to ensure that everyone involved has the correct course according to the work tasks. Taking the wrong course can lead to an increased risk of accidents and serious consequences.
Summary – how to choose the right course
Task | Recommended course | Comment |
---|---|---|
Work on pre-assembled scaffolding | Scaffolding user course | Basic training |
Scaffolding assembly/disassembly | Scaffolding course 2–5 meters / 2–9 meters with fall protection | Depending on height and complexity |
