Work safety is an essential part of safety on construction sites and roadworks. Correct signage and warnings help protect both workers and road users from accidents and dangerous situations. Before you start work safety, it is important to have the necessary expertise and an overview of regulations and procedures.

What is work notification?

Road safety is the act of erecting and maintaining signs, barriers and other equipment that warn of work in or near the road. The goal is to ensure a safe workplace and provide road users with the information they need to travel safely.

What courses do you need to perform work notification?

In order to perform work reporting in a safe and legal manner, training is required in accordance with the requirements of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. At GTM Kompetanse we offer two levels of work reporting courses:

Work safety course 1 – Basic training for employees

This course is mandatory for anyone who works on or near roads, especially on national and county roads. All employees who will be performing work on or near roads must have completed this course to ensure the necessary competence.

  • Course format: Live webinar with an experienced instructor

  • Validity: Certificate of competence valid for 5 years

  • Target group: Contractors, construction workers, employers and anyone who participates in work where work notification is required

  • Content: Laws and regulations, safety routines, risk assessment, use of warning and safety equipment, traffic safety and division of responsibilities, logging and reporting

Occupational health and safety course 2 – For responsible personnel

Personnel responsible for work on or near roads, including those who prepare and approve warning plans, must complete this course. The course provides a deeper theoretical understanding and practical knowledge necessary to fulfill the role of responsible person.

  • Course format: Webinar with valid certificate of competence

  • Target group: Workplace managers, occupational health and safety planners and managers with occupational health and safety responsibilities

  • Content: Laws and regulations, Sign Regulations Chapter 14, excavation and work permits, preparation and control of work warning plans, risk assessments, warning equipment and safety, requirements for workplaces and accessibility, control and sanctions

Important tips before starting work notification

  • Plan well: Map traffic density, road conditions and risk factors at the work site.

  • Choose the right equipment: Use approved signs, barriers and warning technology.

  • Follow the regulations: Ensure that signage and security are in line with laws and regulations.

  • Update your skills: Certificates of competence are valid for 5 years, so remember to renew if necessary.

  • Follow up on site: Check that the work alert is working and adjust as needed along the way.
